Michael Cole
Ten year mesothelioma survivor, Michael Cole, shares the profound impact of faith and beliefs on life’s journey, emphasizing the importance of accepting mortality and finding peace amidst uncertainties. It highlights that life is a mix of pleasant and unpleasant experiences, urging individuals to appreciate every day and the small moments that bring joy.
I believe that our faith, it really is the foundation of how we live our lives. And I think everybody has to face their mortality in a situation like this. And come to terms with the fact that we are not going to live forever.
That we are not going to be necessarily healthy forever. That life is a journey and it involves a lot of different experiences. Some of them pleasant, some of them not pleasant, but we need to accept those things.
I believe that we should have faith in our creator. And I have a firm belief that, you know, this is just a tiny drop in the bucket of what there is in reality. And we're just here for a little while, no matter what.
You know? And so I think that we need to, accept that and be at peace with that. That helps tremendously in being able to, get through
situations like, like a major illness. You know, whatever happens, it's okay.
I don't worry about it. And, that's huge. And it also reminds us to be thankful for every day.
Reminds us to be thankful for our family and friends and all the the good experiences that we have. And depending on our situation,
the things that we can enjoy and appreciate,
learn to appreciate, can be different. They can change. Something that comes to mind, I remember when I was going through chemotherapy.
Very, very sick. Miserable. And, I would take my shower each day
at a certain time in the afternoon because we have a skylight in our bathroom and it would make the light go into the shower at a certain way, in a certain angle. And, when I would take my shower, it would light up that the the shower, and the water would actually make like a rainbow in there. Sometimes, that was what I looked forward to during the day.
It helped also because taking a shower was so tiring. I needed something to help me to look forward to it, some reason to get in there. And so I would take my shower and I looked forward to just standing there in that light with the, you know, the water and the reflect of the rainbows in the mist and all that.
And that was the time when I relaxed and enjoyed that shower. Little things like that that you never think of in the normal course of life can become very important. I learned to look for things like that.
Just the little things that you can appreciate because there's always something. You know, even when I was in pain, even when I was sick. There are times when you're in too much pain and too much sickness to enjoy anything at all.
It happens. There are times like that. But it gets better. In most days, you could find something to look forward to, something to appreciate.
