Renowned mesothelioma specialist, Dr. David Sugarbaker discusses how mesothelioma treatment options have changed.

[MUSIC PLAYING] How has mesotheliomoa treatment changed over the last, let's say, 25 years? And I think probably the further advancement of multimodality therapy-- the treatment of mesothelioma began as sort of a single modality treatment strategy-- surgery only, followed by maybe some additional chemotherapy, maybe not. What's happened is, as we have developed an understanding of how the disease grows, where the disease spreads to-- it happens to go to the surrounding tissues. We didn't know that when we started. All of these bits of information have directed us to anticipate its return in certain areas. And with that, we've been able to use other modalities to prevent its return. And so as we use new modalities-- immunotherapy, new types of radiation, chemotherapy, proton beam therapy-- all of these other types of treatments are continuing to just grow in terms of their usage. So I think it's going to be surgery with additional types of multimodality therapies, so new modalities combined with surgery. That's what I've seen in the last 25 years-- a growing marriage, if you will, between cytoreduction and subsequent use of some other modality. [MUSIC PLAYING]
