What Are the Differences Between Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer?
Thoracic surgeon, Dr. Fontaine talks about the differences between mesothelioma and lung cancer.
[MUSIC PLAYING] There's a misconception that mesothelioma and lung cancer are the same thing. In fact, they're not. Mesothelioma is a cancer that starts in the lining around the lung, that very commonly presents with fluid around the lung. And it's related more often than not with asbestos exposure. Lung cancer, on the other hand, is much, much more common. For every mesothelioma that we diagnose, we diagnose 95 lung cancers. Lung cancer is actually a cancer that starts inside the lung. Not on the lining, around the lung like mesothelioma, rather inside the lung. And there's two main types of lung cancer, small cell lung cancer and the majority of them are called non-small cell lung cancer. The majority of which are called adenocarcinoma. However, patients who develop lung cancer or mesothelioma have common risk factors. Meaning asbestos exposure and smoking. There's a group of patients who are now getting lung cancer more and more often, and those are non-smoking women. So even if you haven't smoked, you can develop mesothelioma. Even if you haven't smoked, you can still develop lung cancer. [MUSIC PLAYING]
