What Advice Do You Have for Patients and Caregivers Starting to Navigate the Challenges of an Asbestos-Related Illness?
Amy Pelegrin, hospice care director at Asbestos.com, offers advice for patients and caregivers dealing with the challenges of an asbestos-related illness.
I always try if a patient has been diagnosed or a family member contacts me. My first thing is to try to give them a little hope and not let them think this is it. Like, everything's over. Because there is help out there you know, and there is some hope. It's day at a time. They need to realize that they need to take it day at a time, but they also need to make sure that they know every thing about this illness, you know, that they let themselves out there so they can find the stuff and the resources to help them, you know, put them in the best situation impossible. It's not always good in the beginning. It could be more of a terminal diagnosis from the beginning if it's very far along, you know, every person's different, whether it's their age, their overall health, you know, how advanced the disease is. But whatever step therein, I still try to give them a little hope or make them comfortable knowing. We'll get through this. We'll help you get through this, whatever it is.
