Mesothelioma expert Dr. Marcelo DaSilva on the causes of mesothelioma.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. Patients inhale asbestos most of the time during their line of work, but some other times, family members would bring mesothelioma to the household, for instance. It causes chronic inflammation, and those chronic inflammatory changes in the lung lining, which is the pleura, would then lead to genetic changes in a cell that then gets changed in its DNA into a cancer cell. There's also talc, which has been most recently associated with development of mesothelioma. [MUSIC PLAYING]
