Why Should Mesothelioma Patients Get a Second Opinion?
Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Velotta, discusses the importance of getting a second opinion around a mesothelioma diagnosis.
Second opinions for mesothelioma, I think, are more important than any other cancer that I treat. And that it is such a rare, complex disease with multiple different opinions from multiple different providers depending on what website you look at. I think second, even third opinions are important. I think there's such thing as too many opinions. There's some patients that will go for six opinions. They'll go to East Coast, West Coast, outside of the country. I think that's probably too much because then it gets confusing for patients, especially if they're not in the medical field. I think two to three opinions, second opinions, and even a third opinion, highly recommend. In fact, all the patients that see me in particular, they'll ask me, they'll be like, Oh, are you okay if I go see another doctor? And they're kind of shy or bashful about it. I actually tell them, No, you should. If it was me that had it, if was a family member that had it, I want to get two or three at the most opinions from different institutions so it's non biased. You don't necessarily want to see the same provider at the same hospital, but at an outside institution it's very helpful because of all the controversies that we've talked about with mesothelioma about the optimal treatment and so much of the misnomers out there about mesothelioma being a fatal disease. Aggressive, but there are things that can be done. I do think the second and third opinions are very important.
