Senior Asbestos.com Content Writer, Time Povtek, explains why so many veterans were exposed to asbestos.

[UPBEAT MUSIC] One reason so many veterans end up with mesothelioma-- and in fact, it's 30% of all mesothelioma patients usually are veterans. And the reason is that-- is that the services, the Navy, the Army, the Marine Corps, asbestos was a very valuable product for years, many years ago. Asbestos was a wonderful-- was a miracle worker. It protected-- it protected our veterans. It made anything that you were mixed with asbestos made it stronger. It helped fireproof where they lived, where they ate, the jets they flew in, the boats they were in, the submarines, the aircraft carriers. Asbestos actually saved a lot of veterans by fireproofing everything that they were around. However, what they didn't know was that it also was going to be toxic and then, at 20, 30, 40 years from now, they were going to have problems. And that's why so many veterans have come down with problems. And it's because asbestos was toxic. But yet, at one time, it was a wonderful mineral, back in the '50s, '60s, '70s. We didn't know it was going to cause the problems that it's causing. But it's turned out to be a pretty bad case. And that's why so many veterans have problems today. [UPBEAT MUSIC]
