About The University of Pennsylvania Cancer Centers

Philadelphia is home to one of the world's premier cancer treatment centers, the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania. This renowned cancer center currently sees more than 70,000 outpatient visits as well as 9,000 inpatient discharges.

While every form of cancer and related conditions are treated at the Abramson Cancer Center, there is a particular focus on the care and treatment of mesothelioma and related pleural diseases at Penn Medicine's Mesothelioma and Pleural Program. This multidisciplinary community of medical and surgical experts collaborates to diagnose, treat and educate patients as they adjust to the emotional and physical side effects of the disease.

The team includes such noted physicians as Corey J. Langer, M.D., director of Thoracic Oncology, who specializes in lung cancer, mesothelioma and other thoracic malignancies; Daniel H. Sterman, M.D., co-director of the Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Program and chief of the Section of Interventional Pulmonology and Thoracic Oncology at Penn Medicine, specializing in interventional diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for mesothelioma, lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies; Joseph Friedberg, M.D. chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center; and James Phillip Stevenson, M.D., director of the Thoracic Oncology Program at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, with clinical expertise in malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, lung tumors and related conditions.

Treatment

When it comes to mesothelioma treatment, Penn's Mesothelioma and Pleural Program has access to the latest, most advanced surgical and medical techniques, ensuring personalized patient outcomes with an emphasis on minimally invasive procedures. Among these are:

  • Surgeries, including extrapleural pneumonectomy, thoracotomies and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
  • Radiation, including brachytherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and proton therapies (an advanced form of radiation therapy, delivered at the Penn Medicine's Roberts Proton Therapy Center, the largest in the world
  • Chemotherapy and Biologic therapies, including combination chemotherapy and immunotherapy
  • Targeted therapies, including gene and adjuvant therapies
  • Interventional pulmonology treatments, including endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsy and mediastinal staging pleuroscopy

Research & Clinical Trials

Research is crucial to the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer and thoracic conditions, and Abramson’s program is considered among the world’s most accomplished. A coordinated approach is the hallmark. It relies on collaboration from professionals representing various disciplines and modalities, along with more than 400 basic, translational and clinical scientists.

The Penn University System's involvement provides doctors and patients with a host of medical and educational resources. In regard to mesothelioma and related diseases, this relationship allows for a better understanding of the genetic links. All mesothelioma patients are given the option to participate in clinical trials.
