Kevin wants survivors to know about the Patient Advocates at The Mesothelioma Center who helped him advocate for himself. “Originally, I thought that asking for a second opinion is insulting to your doctor,” Kevin recalls. "But not every doctor does things the same way. A second opinion can be really important.”
Michael talks about setbacks in the midst of a personal storm and how support groups for the mesothelioma community can help. He also explains how important it is to be kind to others who may be going through a rough patch in their lives.
Kevin is sharing his success with chemotherapy three years after his mesothelioma diagnosis. “Overall I’m extremely lucky or blessed or both that I still have all my hair,” Kevin said. “I’ve actually gained weight. I didn't lose it; I gained it. When I was diagnosed, I was 210 lbs. I’m now right around 230 lbs.”
Kevin Hession is passionate about sharing his story and reaching out to other mesothelioma survivors. Kevin was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in August 2021. His goal is to raise awareness about this rare cancer and help others who are on similar journeys.
Kevin talks about some of the lasting effects from his decortication surgery following his pleural mesothelioma diagnosis. He also shares why he believes a daily routine is key for survivors. “It helps you feel like you’re still normal, but with an issue you have to deal with,” Kevin said.

"I get a huge sense of satisfaction from getting to actually reach out to them about something that’s important to most Catholics,” Kevin said.
Three years after his diagnosis and surgery, pleural mesothelioma survivor Kevin Hession shares the importance of his diet and exercise routine. “You don’t shut yourself away in your house. That doesn’t do anything for you emotionally and doesn’t do anything for you physically." Kevin explains.
Kevin shares how he believes staying positive is a must after a mesothelioma diagnosis. “I am not going to let this disease ruin what’s left of my life. That’s up to me to live my life to the fullest that I can for however many days God has planned for me to live. I won’t let this disease control me,” Kevin said.
