Patients shouldn’t have to guess at how to pay for mesothelioma care or where to turn for financial help. Figuring out the financial side of treatment can start with some very practical concerns. Will insurance cover a specialist? What can patients do if a claim is denied? Where can they find help with prescriptions, medical bills or travel for treatment?
People with mesothelioma may have options they haven’t considered, whether they’re trying to get an insurer to cover recommended care or looking for help with expenses that add up during treatment. Appealing a denial, asking about an exception for out-of-network care, applying for financial assistance or exploring veterans benefits can each involve different rules and processes.
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m. ET, Amy Edel, senior editor at content strategist at The Mesothelioma Center, will host a free webinar with Medical Outreach Director Missy Peterson and Financial Advocate Danielle DiPietro. They’ll discuss insurance coverage, Medicare, appeals and financial assistance, with practical information to help patients and families explore their options.
Mesothelioma patients can take specific steps to check their insurance coverage, challenge restrictions and find out whether it will pay for care from a specialist. Missy and Danielle will explain what to ask about Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid, as well as options for patients whose preferred specialists are outside their plan’s network.
The type of insurance a patient has can affect referral requirements, provider networks and access to care. Knowing what to check before scheduling an appointment can help patients ask more informed questions about their coverage.
For patients whose preferred mesothelioma doctor is out of network, options such as network-gap exceptions and single-case agreements may be worth exploring. The webinar will help patients and families learn what these arrangements involve and when they may apply.
When an insurer denies coverage for recommended mesothelioma care, patients may face difficult questions about what happens next and whether they can appeal the decision. An appeal gives them a chance to ask the insurer to reconsider, but the process can involve medical evidence and reviews that aren’t always easy to navigate.
Missy and Danielle will explain what patients can expect when they challenge an insurer’s decision, including why appeals can require more information than the original request for coverage. They’ll also address how patients can work with their medical team when an insurer questions whether recommended care is medically necessary.
Patient Advocates can help patients sort through insurance questions, explore financial assistance options and work through the appeals process. Their experience can be especially valuable when patients aren’t sure how to respond to a denial or what to ask their insurance company next.

Save Your SpotFinancial assistance for mesothelioma can come from several sources, including prescription and copay programs, travel grants, government benefits and legal claims related to asbestos exposure. Which options are available depends on each patient’s circumstances, and some financial resources may be unfamiliar to patients and their families.
Missy and Danielle will discuss how patients can explore these resources and what to consider as financial needs change during mesothelioma treatment. Their experience can help patients and families look beyond insurance coverage alone when weighing the costs of care.
