A National Leader in Cancer Treatment and Innovation
City of Hope is a world-renowned comprehensive cancer center dedicated to delivering expert, compassionate care and advancing breakthrough treatments. Founded more than 100 years ago, City of Hope combines cutting-edge research with personalized patient care to improve outcomes for people with cancer, including asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma.
The treatment center began in 1913 when volunteers formed the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association to help tuberculosis patients. They opened the Los Angeles Sanatorium in Duarte, California, starting with two canvas cottages. As tuberculosis declined, City of Hope shifted to cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS care.
It has grown into a leading medical and research institution. City of Hope has made groundbreaking contributions such as developing the first synthetic human insulin and pioneering cancer therapies. Specialized programs at City of Hope focus on complex and rare cancers like mesothelioma, helping patients access novel treatments and emerging clinical trials.
The main City of Hope campus in Duarte, California, serves as a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. And U.S. News & World Report has ranked it among the top cancer hospitals in the nation. The campus spans 110 acres and hosts a multidisciplinary team of specialists who collaborate closely to provide innovative, individualized therapies. City of Hope also operates additional cancer hospitals and outpatient centers across the U.S., including locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and Orange County California, bringing expert cancer care closer to people’s homes.
Coordinated Cancer Care From Diagnosis Through Survivorship
City of Hope’s integrated care model ensures patients receive personalized treatment plans tailored to their unique cancer type and stage. It offers comprehensive care from early detection and diagnosis to surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and clinical trials. Patients at City of Hope benefit from a full spectrum of services in one convenient location.
City of Hope is also at the forefront of precision oncology. It offers minimally invasive robotic surgeries, targeted therapies and advanced cellular treatments such as CAR T-cell therapy and bone marrow transplants.
The center also emphasizes supportive care services to address the emotional, nutritional and rehabilitative needs of patients and their families. Coordination among oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, nurses and support staff ensures a seamless experience geared toward improving quality of life and treatment outcomes.
Clinical Trials and Cutting-Edge Research to Advance Cancer Care
City of Hope is deeply committed to research and innovation, investing more than $1 billion in recent years to expand outpatient cancer care and accelerate the development of new therapies. The institution has pioneered many life-saving treatments, including advances in gene therapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy that harness the body’s own immune system to fight cancer while minimizing side effects.
Through numerous clinical trials, City of Hope patients can access investigational therapies and the latest advances in cancer science. The Hope Plaza outpatient center in Los Angeles is the largest in City of Hope’s national system, designed to increase capacity for Phase 1-3 clinical trials and provide integrated multidisciplinary care. This facility offers state-of-the-art imaging, diagnostics and supportive services to optimize patient outcomes.
