Mobil Oil Corporation
Mobil Oil Corporation, also known as Exxon Mobil, is the world's second largest oil and gas supplier. The corporation produces and sells crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products and operates 38 oil refineries across 21 countries.
Mobil Oil and Asbestos
Mobil Oil commonly used asbestos in their products before the 1970s, as the material was a popular insulant. Industrial equipment was often lined with asbestos to contain the heat inside the machines and prevent accidental combustion.
Mobil Oil products that contained asbestos include:
- Heat-generating vessels and carriers
- Pipelines
- Pumps
- Reactors
- Furnaces
- Ovens
- Dryers
- Heat exchangers
- Boilers
- Protective clothing worn by refinery workers
Over the years, thousands of Mobil Oil Corporation employees including contractors and repairmen may have been exposed to asbestos-lined equipment on a daily basis and may have run the risk of inhaling asbestos fibers emitted by worn or damaged parts. In the absence of any respiratory protection, workers may have inhaled the particles.
A 2007 study conducted in the UK found that petroleum workers had elevated rates of mesothelioma and melanoma when compared to the general population. The study examined 45,000 oil refinery and petroleum distribution workers who had been employed for at least 12 months between 1946 and 1971.
Asbestos Litigation
Currently, hundreds of thousands of asbestos suits have been filed against Mobil Oil, with some alleging Mobil Oil was negligent in allowing employees to be exposed to the toxic mineral. On March 17, 2011, ship repairman Bert Minton, 72, was awarded $25 million from Mobil Oil by a Virginia jury for his mesothelioma damages.
Individuals who have been exposed to asbestos or who have received a diagnosis of an asbestos-related condition are urged to consider educating themselves regarding treatment options and potential financial reimbursement. Mobil Oil Corporation Company History
Mobil Oil runs operations in more than 200 countries and territories across the world and supplies refined products to more than 400,000 service stations worldwide. Currently, the company reports a combined daily refining capacity of 6.3 million barrels.
Mobil Oil was an independent corporation until it merged with the Exxon Corporation in 1999. The company was formerly known as Baby Standard Oils, which was created as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court antitrust judgment of 1911. In 1931, the two companies, Vacuum Oil and Standard Oil of New York, merged to form Socony Vacuum.
The name of the company was changed to Socony Mobil Oil in 1951 and was shortened to Mobil Oil in 1966. Mobil later expanded to Europe and owns many petrol stations, refineries, lubricant plants and petrochemical installations in that area.
In the 1980s, Mobil Europe joined forces with British Petroleum (BP) to sell fuels and lubricants to companies worldwide. However, the joint venture was later divided as a condition of the Mobil/Exxon merger, with Mobil retaining the lubrication business and BP inheriting the remaining production and marketing operations.
Exxon Mobil has several divisions and affiliates operating under the names of Exxon Mobil, Exxon, Esso and Mobil.
