Raphael Bueno

Bio

Raphael Bueno, M.D., is the associate chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While maintaining an interest in lung cancer and esophageal cancer, much of his most recent research has focused on treating mesothelioma.

Some of his latest studies have focused on the prevention and management of complications following extrapleural pneumonectomies, a common surgical procedure for pleural mesothelioma patients. He has also studied which factors are associated with long-term survival following this surgery.

One of Bueno’s main objectives is to better understand mesothelioma at the molecular level and create new diagnostic and therapeutic treatments with his findings. He also wishes to identify prognostic and diagnostic markers for both mesothelioma and lung cancer patients.

Another primary objective of Bueno’s mesothelioma research is the study of how some mesothelioma cells are more resistant to chemotherapy treatments. 

As part of his mesothelioma research, Bueno has led a team of doctors and scientists to develop the mesothelioma predictive test, which has accurately identified patients who will benefit from surgery.

This test is already being used on patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and received a broad patent in 2008. Bueno is consistently involved in researching mesothelioma cancer and has collaborated with some of the most highly respected mesothelioma specialists through clinical trials. 

After completing his education at Harvard Medical School in 1985, Bueno served residencies at both Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is currently an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and serves in several other positions.

Publications
