About The VA Boston Healthcare System

United States veterans in the Boston area have the option to seek treatment at the VA Boston Healthcare System, one of the nation’s highest-ranking Veteran Affairs medical programs. In 2009, the system was ranked first in performance among all of the nation’s VA medical centers. Veterans with a history of asbestos exposure can receive preventative screening and treatment for asbestos-related diseases within the VA Boston Healthcare System.

Three campuses make up the primary Boston VA Medical System. Depending on their residential location and medical requirements, patients may visit the Jamaica Plain division inside of Boston, the Brockton division or the West Roxbury division. Two of the main campuses – Brockton and West Roxbury – offer inpatient care with a total of 606 beds.

The primary medical centers are supplemented by six outpatient clinics in the greater Boston area. Various facilities are associated with Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard University, among other esteemed institutions. The VA Boston Healthcare System is the largest tertiary care facility (meaning the facility specializes in advanced inpatient care) in New England.

Treatment at VA Boston Healthcare System

In 2010 the entire health care system treated 63,093 unique patients and conducted more than 739,000 outpatient visits. With specific oncology, radiation therapy and radiology departments, veterans who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma are able to obtain treatment for their cancer within the Boston VA system.

Most mesothelioma patients who go to the Boston VA Medical Center will be treated at the Jamaica Plain campus. This location also offers the majority of subspecialty clinics that mesothelioma patients may need to utilize, including medicine and surgery.

Specific social services are also offered at the VA hospital. Veterans who are struggling with their mesothelioma diagnosis may find it beneficial to schedule counseling sessions, while mesothelioma patients in a later stage of the cancer may consider taking advantage of the program’s palliative care and hospice benefits at the Brockton campus.

For patients traveling to the Jamaica Plain campus from 50 or more miles away, lodging is available at the Huntington House for appointments, treatment or surgery. The Fisher House, part of a program that has served more than 10,000 families, also offers relatives of hospitalized veterans to stay near their loved ones during their treatments at the Boston VA Hospital.

The VA’s research contributions are conducted by a staff of more than 125 laboratory workers. Many clinical trials and epidemiological studies performed at the facility earn sponsorship and funding from the National Institutes of Health. Considering all the services, specialized departments and clinical trial opportunities available, veteran mesothelioma victims can confidently seek quality health care from the Boston VA Hospital System.
