About Dr. Abtin

Dr. Fereidoun Abtin specializes in minimally invasive, multidisciplinary treatment of pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer and thymomas. His expertise includes lung biopsy and thermal ablation of pulmonary tumors.

As the director of the Thoracic Imaging Research Laboratory and the UCLA Health Santa Monica Outpatient Imaging and Interventional Center, he has built a leading lung biopsy practice and tissue biobank. Through his research and various clinical trials, he has helped develop a variety of novel treatments for thoracic diseases. The thoracic program Dr. Abtin directs is known as the most comprehensive program of its kind in Southern California.

Dr. Abtin uses microwave and radiofrequency ablation techniques. He has also pioneered the use of cryoablation, also known as cryosurgery or cryotherapy. Cryoablation involves freezing localized tumors with argon gas or liquid nitrogen. It traditionally has been used for prostate, liver and kidney cancers. Dr. Abtin has utilized it in combination with immunotherapy as a second-line treatment for pleural mesothelioma.

He graduated from Kasturba Medical College in India. He also completed fellowships in Radiology and in the Thoracic Radiology Research Group at UCLA School of Medicine.
