MacMahon was the leader of the Center’s Advanced Imaging department, coordinating the basic and clinical research of investigators in several disciplines.

He was a specialist in lung disease imaging, skilled in the interpretation of CT scans and chest radiographs. His goal was to transform cancer care through advanced imaging.

His clinical interests include computer-aided diagnostics of lung diseases, such as mesothelioma; mediastinal tumors and dual-energy chest radiography. His research groups focused on applying imaging to the study of cancer progression and developing new technology for image-guided therapy.

He attended medical school at University College in Dublin, Ireland. He did his residency in St. Louis at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. He did internships at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin and at Somerset Hospital in New Jersey.

In 2018, Dr. MacMahon collaborated with researchers to help modify RECIST guidelines used to measure and grade mesothelioma tumors through radiology imaging.
