Since 2001 Stephen Yang, M.D., has served as the chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in Baltimore, Maryland.
A member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Yang performs life-saving operations for the mesothelioma, lung cancer and esophageal cancer patients who seek treatment at the hospital.
Johns Hopkins has established a long history of surgical innovations, and their facility continues to implement groundbreaking procedures such as minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery. Yang takes special interest in the lung-volume reduction surgery and the video-assisted method of performing thoracic operations.
His research contributes to potential breakthroughs in treating mesothelioma. He is heavily involved with researching the molecular biology of mesothelioma, which helps reveal how mesothelioma cells act and react to certain stimuli such as chemotherapeutic drugs. His research also includes topics related to mesothelioma and lung cancer diagnoses.
Yang joined the staff at Johns Hopkins after completing a surgical residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, a three year thoracic surgery research fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. Yang is certified through the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
