Dr. Matthew Schuchert
A thoracic surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s (UPMC) Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute, Dr. Matthew Schuchert, M.D., is a graduate of Yale University (where he received a Bachelor of Science degree) and prestigious Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland (where he earned his medical degree). After graduation in 1994, he completed an Internship in Surgery at UPMC and then became a Junior Resident in Surgery there as well. Schuchert also earned a Research Fellowship in Surgery at UPMC and then became a senior surgical resident and later the chief resident in surgery at the hospital. He was also a Fellow in Minimally Invasive Thoracic and Foregut Surgery at UPMC from 2002 to 2003 and a resident in Cardiothoracic Surgery from 2003 to 2005.
As a researcher, Dr. Schuchert and his staff are primarily focused on the study of T cell and Dendritic Cell subsets and their roles in donor-specific transplantation tolerance and anti-tumor immunity. He is currently studying how T cell and Dendritic cell subsets are modulated in the setting of lung cancer, with the specific aims of understanding how immune status influences outcomes in lung cancer, and how immunomodulation can be achieved to augment host responses to tumor.
Dr. Schuchert has been a guest reviewer for a number of professional journals including Annals of Thoracic Surgery, British Journal of Cancer, Diseases of the Esophagus, JCTVS, Surgical Endoscopy, World Journal of Gastroenterology, and World Journal of Surgery. He has authored and co-authored many papers and book chapters including many dealing with the treatment of lung cancers like mesothelioma.
Schuchert is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons (Candidate), Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society, American Association of Immunologists (Trainee Member), and the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association.
