MD Anderson Remains Top-Ranked Cancer Center
U.S. News & World Report named University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as the No. 1 Adult Cancer Hospital in America for the fifth consecutive year.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in Boston, round out the top five, respectively.
All five have highly regarded specialty centers for pleural mesothelioma, the rare and aggressive cancer caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers.
The expertise in mesothelioma treatment contributed to the top rankings in the 2019-20 Best Hospitals for Cancer category.
“Mesothelioma is a challenging condition to treat. And these [high-ranking] hospitals specialize in treating complex cancers,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of Health Analysis at U.S. News & World Report. “The more experience a doctor or hospital has with a particular diagnosis, the better the outcomes tend to be. That’s why we evaluate hospitals.”
Rankings Help Guide Patients
The cancer rankings are part of a broader Best Hospitals Honor Roll done annually by U.S. News & World Report.
Overall rankings involve 16 areas of complex specialty care, which includes cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, gynecology, orthopedics and urology.
The rankings are designed to provide assistance to patients making decisions about the best places to receive their care.
Mesothelioma patients are likely to find more expertise at a specialty center, where oncologists see and treat the disease more often, and where doctors have access to the latest cutting-edge therapy options.
The MD Anderson Cancer Center, for example, is part of 17 different mesothelioma clinical trials in the recruiting or active-and-not-recruiting stage.
One of those clinical trials for mesothelioma opened in 2019 and was designed to measure the efficacy of TC-210, a novel T-cell therapy that targets a specific protein found in several cancers.
Medical oncologist Dr. Anne Tsao is director of MD Anderson’s mesothelioma program and a national authority in research and disease treatment.
The U.S. News & World Report cancer center rankings are based upon several factors and an overall scoring system of zero to 100.
The specific categories are outcomes (rate of discharge to home and survival rate), care-related factors such as the intensity of nurse staffing and breadth of patient services, patient experience, and expert opinion obtained through the physician survey.
