Perhaps it’s why Dr. Jack Elias was elected president of the Association of American Physicians, one of the most esteemed and selective medical societies.
Through his clinical research, Elias is heralded as a leading authority on lung diseases and lung injuries, including the topic of scarring that is often caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers, which can lead to mesothelioma.
Elias has provided specific targets for pharmaceutical companies looking for therapies to help patients with asthma, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and other lung problems. His research groups have studied and developed genetic models that have translated well to human counterparts. His studies of molecular biology related to lung repair have been invaluable.
Dr. Elias Chair, Department of Internal Medicine“Jack’s research in pulmonary medicine has really led the field and has spanned all the way from very basic science to clinical research, where his basic science is leading to new treatments for pulmonary disease,” said Robert Alpern, M.D., dean and professor of medicine at Yale. “To be president of the AAP is, needless o say, a very great honor. [It] really attests to Jack’s reputation among the leaders of academic medicine, nationally and probably internationally.”
